Lymphoedema:

Axillary lymph node dissection. If sentinel node biopsy positive for cancer, if they have other suspicious that you have widespread cancer in your lymph nodes. Your surgeon will remove a pad of fatty tissue that contains a collection of axillary lymph node ( lymph nodes beneath your arm) during an axillary lymph node dissection. They will examine the tissue meticulously to look for indications of malignancy.

Risk and Benefits:

Removing the cancer is the primary goal of breast cancer surgery because untreated cancer can be fatal. The dangers of breast cancer greatly exceed the risks of the procedure

Complications

For a few weeks following the procedure, you can feel soreness and restricted movement in your arms and chest. Painkillers will be provided for you to take home. Additionally, you will receive regular exercises for your arms and shoulders. These are key in avoiding stiffness. For a while, you might feel exhausted. Regaining your previous energy levels may take many weeks. The majority of people can get back to their regular routines in about a month.

FOLLOW UP:

Your health care team will be working with the results of the lymph node biopsy while your are recovering after surgery. They will want to confirm that your body is free of any cancerous cells. Following confirmation of your results, they will talk with you about these and your next course of action. Your treatment plan may include chemotherapy, radiation therapy or more follow up surgery.

When to call the surgeon?

Team will schedule a follow up appointment about one or two weeks after your surgery. During your appointment, they will assess your condition, plan the next steps in your treatment plan. Make sure to see your surgeon if you experience any strange symptoms or complications following your surgery.
