If you’re reading this, you might be getting ready for surgery to remove breast cancer. It’s quite acceptable to feel anxious or uneasy, but being prepared can give you a sense of control. We are available to assist you through out the procedure.

What Is It?
- It serves to find out whether cancer has progressed to the lymph nodes.
- Sentinel Node: The lymph node or nodes that the primary tumor’s cancer cells are most likely to spread to.
How is it carried out?
- Imaging: To locate the sentinel node(s), a scan may be performed.
- Surgery: The detected node(s) are removed for inspection during surgery.
Advantages
- Minimally Invasive: Not as invasive as conventional dissection of the axillary lymph
- Surgery: The detected node(s) are removed for inspection during surgery.
Disadvantages
- Minimally Invasive: Not as invasive as standard dissection of the axillary lymph nodes.
- Accurate staging: Assists in directing treatment choices by determining if lymph nodes have malignancy.
- Potential Risk : Haemorrhage, Allergic Reactions, and Dye-related infections.

For a few weeks following the procedure, you can feel soreness and restricted movement in your arms and chest. Painkillers will be provided for you to take home. Additionally, you will receive regular exercises for your arms and shoulders. These are key in avoiding stiffness. For a while, you might feel exhausted. Regaining your previous energy levels may take many weeks. The majority of people can get back to their regular routines in about a month.
FOLLOW UP:
Your health care team will be working with the results of the lymph node biopsy while your are recovering after surgery. They will want to confirm that your body is free of any cancerous cells. Following confirmation of your results, they will talk with you about these and your next course of action. Your treatment plan may include chemotherapy, radiation therapy or more follow up surgery.
